The City of Masvingo officially inaugurated its 2026–2027 Junior Council in a colourful ceremony attended by the Mayor, Town Clerk, senior councillors, management, school heads, school focal persons, parents, members of the outgoing Junior Council, and other stakeholders.
The inauguration marked the beginning of a new one-year term of office for the young leaders who will represent the interests of children and youths within the city while promoting civic participation and leadership development.
A key highlight of the ceremony was the symbolic handover of the mayoral robe from outgoing Junior Mayor Sean Masimba to incoming Junior Mayor Praise Turikai, signifying a smooth transition of leadership and the continuation of the Junior Council’s mandate.
Addressing the gathering, City officials commended the outgoing Junior Council for its dedication and contribution to youth development initiatives during its tenure. They also encouraged the newly elected councillors to embrace their responsibilities with integrity, commitment, and a passion for service.
The Town Clerk administered the Oath of Office to the newly elected junior councillors, officially ushering them into office. The councillors pledged to serve diligently, uphold the values of good governance, and act in the best interests of the children and young people of Masvingo.
The 2026–2027 Junior Council reflects both continuity and renewal, with 11 councillors successfully retaining their seats while four new councillors joined the team. The blend of experienced and new members is expected to strengthen the council’s ability to advocate for issues affecting young people and contribute fresh ideas to the city’s development agenda.
Speaking after receiving the mayoral robe, Junior Mayor Praise Turikai expressed gratitude for the confidence placed in the new leadership and pledged to work closely with fellow councillors, schools, and city authorities to champion issues affecting children and youth in Masvingo.
The City of Masvingo remains committed to empowering young people through platforms such as the Junior Council, which provides valuable opportunities for leadership development, civic engagement, and participation in local governance.
